Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS CHINESE MEDICINE?
Chinese medicine is a system of medicine that has diagnosed, treated, and prevented illness for thousands of years. Based on the observation of nature and our interaction with the environment, Chinese medicine works with the body’s inherent healing power to restore balance and maintain optimal health. Treatments include acupuncture, herbal formulas, massage, breath work and movement, diet, and lifestyle advice.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture at The Balance Point Acupuncture & Wellness is based on a style called Classical Chinese Medicine. This ancient form of medicine is a healing art with an elegant approach to complicated health issues. It has been practiced for over 2,000 years with a philosophy that all disease stems from an imbalance of energy. The skilled practitioner is able to identify warning signs to prevent the onset of illness as well as to prevent further complications of existing disease.

Signs and symptoms along with a thorough evaluation are used to guide the practitioner in determining an assessment and treatment plan to achieve improved wellness and optimal health.

The tools of a Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner include acupuncture, herbal therapy, moxibustion, cupping, diet and lifestyle modifications, and Qi Gong (meditative exercise).

Acupuncture is the use of sterile, stainless steel needles with the goal to regulate the qi (energy) of the body. By influencing this energetic system, the body can return to a place of balance. In essence, acupuncture allows the body to function better. When the body’s functions are in balance, symptoms improve and an overall sense of wellness results.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY TREATMENT?
To make sure you feel your best after a treatment, I recommend that you rest, drink plenty of water, and eat healthy, nourishing foods that are not greasy, heavy, and processed. If possible, try to avoid high intensity exercise and consider a moderate or leisurely walk in nature.  Also try to avoid caffeine and alcohol consumption after your appointment.

WHAT CAN CHINESE MEDICINE DO FOR ME?
It is helpful to understand that Chinese medicine/acupuncture is used as a way to get to the root of a problem and heal more deeply. It’s truly okay to use it however you wish, but know that Chinese medicine really shines when it is used to heal and transform the landscape of your body.

WHEN WILL IT START TO WORK?
I often liken Chinese medicine to physical therapy – it’s a re-training of the body whether you are using acupuncture, nutrition, or both. Some people and conditions tend to respond to acupuncture relatively quickly, others take time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET TREATED?
Generally, I like to see patients on a once per week schedule. Once we start seeing some real changes towards your health goals, we’ll discuss if moving to once every 2 weeks or once per month is the next step.

Maintaining health and balance in our lives can often be a challenge with the daily stresses we encounter. I highly recommend coming in for tune-up treatments regularly (either monthly or seasonally).

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM COLLEEN?
Practicing medicine with integrity is extremely important to me, and YOU are extremely important to me. When you come to The Balance Point Acupuncture & Wellness, it is a time that you get to leave everything outside the door and let someone else take care of you. Know that I will always listen to you, and if you ever need anything while you are here (adjustments in temperature, music, comfort, water, tea… anything) all you have to do is ask. Your comfort is paramount.
